This score is based on the daily and\/or weekly consumption of certain foods defined <em>a priori<\/em> typical of the Mediterranean diet. Other scores have been created by other researchers for assessing the agreement with the Mediterranean diet in different geographical populations or in populations with different physiological states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence the <strong>idea of developing a practical, easy and evidence-based tool for assessing the adherence to the Mediterranean diet at an individual level<\/strong>, using data of daily and\/or weekly consumption of typical and non-typical Mediterranean foods available in the literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Data reported in the meta-analysis by Sofi and colleagues (a meta-analysis is a statistical analysis that combines the results of multiple scientific studies addressing the same question), published in the journal <em>Public Health Nutrition<\/em> in 2014, were used to develop the Medi-Lite score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The absolutely innovative aspect was the possibility to measure and quantify the complex concept of <strong>adherence to the Mediterranean diet<\/strong>, linking it to health indicators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0|0px|13px|0px|false|false&#8221; _i=&#8221;2&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2.0&#8243; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.4&#8243; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2.0.0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221;]\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">How it has been developed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Medi-Lite score has been developed starting from the scientific studies included in the meta-analysis on Mediterranean diet and health status published in 2014. First of all, <u>the amounts chosen as cut-offs for determining adherence to the Mediterranean diet were extracted from each individual study<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Subsequently, <u>the median amounts of foods consumed<\/u> were calculated and the values obtained were <u>weighted for the number of subjects enrolled in each study<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, for each food group considered in the questionnaire, the <u>mean value of all of weighted medians and the 2 standard deviations<\/u> were calculated. The values identified by the two standard deviations were rounded and chosen as threshold values to define <strong>three categories of consumption for each food group<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From this calculation, daily and\/or weekly consumption values have been obtained for <strong>typical<\/strong> (fruit, vegetables, cereals, legumes and fish) and <strong>non-typical<\/strong> (meat and meat products, dairy products) Mediterranean foods. For typical foods, a value of <strong>2 was assigned to the highest category of consumption, 1 for the middle category and 0 for the lowest category.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.3.1.0&#8243;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conversely, for <strong>food groups not typical of the Mediterranean diet<\/strong> (meat and meat products, dairy products), a value of <strong>2 was assigned for the lowest category, 1 for the middle category and 0 for the highest category of consumption.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For <u>alcohol<\/u>, the categories related to the alcohol unit were used (1 alcohol unit = 12 g of alcohol), by giving <strong>2 points to the middle category<\/strong> (1\u20132 alcohol units\/d), <strong>1 point to the lowest category<\/strong> (1 alcohol unit\/d) and <strong>0 point to the highest category <\/strong>(&gt;2 alcohol units\/d) <strong>of consumption<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, <strong>2 points were assigned for regular use of olive oil, 1 point for frequent use and 0 point for occasional use.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The final score<\/strong>, obtained by summing these values, <strong>varies from 0 (low adherence) to 18 (high adherence).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
