Its protective effects against chronic-degenerative diseases and mortality have been demonstrated by numerous studies conducted in recent decades, while its respect for territory, seasonality and biodiversity guarantees the balance between man and nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, the Mediterranean diet <u>is characterized by<\/u>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">high consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">olive oil as the main source of fat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">moderate consumption of fish, dairy products and eggs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">low consumption of meat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regular consumption of moderate amounts of wine during meals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.1.1.0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;1px|||||&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This dietary pattern has ancient origins, but it was \u201cdiscovered\u201d only in the 1960s, when the US professor <strong>Ancel Keys<\/strong>, a world-renowned physiologist and nutritionist, coined the term \u201cMediterranean diet\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Assuming a possible relationship between lifestyle, eating habits and low incidence of cardiovascular disease in patients of the Hospital of Naples and in the area of Cilento in the immediate post-war period, he launched the famous <em>&#8220;Seven Countries&#8217; Study&#8221;<\/em>, an epidemiological study involving over 12,000 people from seven countries in the world (Finland, Japan, Greece, Italy, Holland, the United States and Yugoslavia), which compared the lifestyle and diets adopted by these populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The results confirmed his hypothesis, <u>showing that in Italy and Greece the mortality rate from ischaemic heart disease was much lower than in other countries<\/u>. <strong>The more the diet of the populations examined differed from the Mediterranean diet, the greater was the incidence of cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The results of the <em>&#8220;Seven Countries&#8217; Study&#8221;<\/em> opened a new field of investigation aimed at understanding why the Mediterranean diet has beneficial effects on health.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; _i=&#8221;2&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2&#8243; column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _i=&#8221;0&#8243; _address=&#8221;1.2.0.0&#8243;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Subsequently, numerous studies on large and different populations have shown incontrovertibly that a Mediterranean-type dietary pattern leads to longer life expectancy and lower incidence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, neoplastic and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and Parkinson&#8217;s disease).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based to the most recent scientific evidence, <strong>a 2-point increase in adherence score to the Mediterranean diet determines a significant reduction of overall mortality (-9%), cardiovascular disease (-10%) and cancer (-5%)<\/strong>.
